Economy Of District Narayanpur

The economy of Narayanpur is predominantly based on agriculture, animal husbandry, and forest-related activities, as most of the population is involved in these sectors. However, the challenging hilly and forested landscape limits traditional farming practices. The indigenous communities primarily depend on subsistence farming and engage in shifting cultivation, where they clear small forest areas for farming and relocate once the soil quality decreases.
Non-timber forest products (NTFPs) like tendu leaves, sal seeds, lac, honey, and medicinal plants are essential for the local economy. These resources are gathered from the forests and either consumed locally or sold in nearby markets.
Although Narayanpur boasts rich mineral reserves, particularly iron ore, large-scale industrial development has been hindered by the region's isolation and concerns regarding mining's environmental and social impacts. The government has initiated efforts to support small-scale industries and handicrafts, focusing on utilizing the traditional skills of the local tribal communities in crafting bamboo products, pottery, and textiles.
