Narayanpur town is the administrative headquarters of this district, which came into existence on 11 May 2007, which has been carved out of Bastar district. The area of the district is 6913.16 square kilometres. This district is adjacent to Kondagaon, Bastar, Bijapur, Kanker district and Maharashtra state.
